The album itself in terms of the songs, the instrumentation, and the performances get as many stars as possible and more. There there a lot of different flavors on the album stylistically, but the album doesn't seem forced or mashed together; it has variety that fits well from one song to the next. The actual record itself for me has a little too much surface noise for being a brand new LP. A friend of mine texted me and said I have to get this album. Not only is it a great album but the pressing is pristine. Those are two things I love: good music and a clean, dynamic sound. I must have been a bit unlucky in that I did not get a pressing that was as clean-sounding as the one my friend got. I cleaned the record once and listened to it again: still quite a bit of surface noise. I cleaned it a second time and listened to it again: better than before but still too much surface noise for a brand new record. I was going to send it back and ask for a replacement but the sound is tolerable so I just decided to keep it. The cracks and pops are more prevalent during different spots on the album, but overall the surface noise doesn't detract from the sound enough for me to want to return it. I gave it four stars but only because of the quality of the sound on my particular pressing. If I got a clean pressing, like my friend, I would have easily given it five stars.
